Photo competition rules


The assignment reads “visualise the significance of Leiden Bio Science Park for the city of Leiden (or vice versa).”


  • Photos will be submitted – royalty-free – between 10 May and 31 May to
  • Submit in one of the common formats: pdf, jpg, png and tiff.
  • The photos will be printed on aluminium panels measuring 20 x 30 cm (shortlisted), 30 x 40 cm (nominated) or 40 x 60 cm (winner).
  • The following information must be supplied with the photos:
  • Photographer’s name
  • Place and date of photo
  • Photo explanation (how this photo answers the assignment)


An expert jury will judge the entries on creativity, imagination and technical quality. The jury will shortlist 10 most suitable photos. These photos will be exhibited (printed on aluminium 20 x 30 cm) from 1 to 21 June in “the Vogelnest” in Vrij Koffiebar, Zernikedreef 4 in Leiden (opposite Leiden University of Applied Sciences).

Between 1 and 21 June, it is the turn of the “public jury”. All interested parties are welcome in “the Bird’s Nest” in Free Coffee Bar to express their preference for the best five photos there. You can do so by sending an email to containing the best 5 photos in order of preference. Maximum one submission per e-mail address.

A summary will be made of all public reviews, from which the final winner will be determined based on preferences.

The 5 photos with the highest public scores will be exhibited (printed on aluminium 30 x 40 cm) on 22 June in “de Kas” of BioPartner 5, de Limes 7 in Oegstgeest.

On 22 June, the jury report will be read out the winner (printed on aluminium 40 x 60 cm) will be announced.

The winning photo will be exhibited at Museum Boerhaave for a month.

Public jury

The public jury consists of everyone who is interested or affected by this competition. All Leiden residents and employees of the Leiden Bio Science Park are especially invited to be part of the public jury.


All printed photos will be donated to the contributors.
