In 2022 Leiden will be the European City of Science


This summer, the biennial ESOF conference will be held in Leiden, followed by the EUCYS event for young scientists.

“This gives Leiden the opportunity to profile itself for a year as a city of science, innovation and solutions. In addition, we have a public programme called ‘Kennis door de Wijken’ (Knowledge through the neighbourhoods), which for 365 days will show Leiden citizens how science contributes to issues such as sustainability, inclusion and quality of life.”

Best inner city

The municipal office is located next to Leiden Central Station, the sixth largest railway station in the Netherlands, fifteen minutes from Schiphol Airport. On one side is the historic city centre and on the other side is the Bio Science Park, the largest Life Sciences & Health Campus in the Netherlands with over three hundred companies, institutions and organisations. The result of 35 years of sticking rigidly to one formula: biotech.

“The strength of Leiden is that we consistently work with our partners from a common vision to make the city even more attractive for residents, businesses and employees,” says alderman Fleur Spijker. “Companies interested in Leiden are cordially invited to drop by. The coffee is ready”.
