Let students figure it out

JIP master 2022

JIP 2022 – Joint Interdisciplinary Project

JIP is an elective Master course at the TU Delft, contained within the curriculum, where students work in groups of ± 5 students for 10 weeks full time on a challenge identified by Industry. The course aims to develop student skills in working across disciplines and from a challenge driven perspective. For the students, JIP projects bring forward unique characteristics such as, a starting point in large open-ended problems, a value-driven approach to problem formulation and decision-making, training of self- awareness and self-leadership in combination with teamwork in projects that require addressing engineering problem-solving, societal concerns and an entrepreneurial mindset and working method.

The JIP project assignments are about innovative interdisciplinary deep integrative design or research projects, and orientated towards value creation for society. Solutions have to be environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. The challenges require that innovative engineering and technology in an interdisciplinary mindset are in balance with non-engineering aspects such as societal relevance and impact, and ‘out-of-the-box’ business ‘in the niche’ development. The solutions must be actionable. The teams working on the challenge have a diverse background from the different faculties at the TU Delft. In JIP 2022 about 50 companies/projects and 240 students will participate.

Company participation

Each student team will be mentored by a company coach. We expect of the company coach:
  • To regularly meet (minimum weekly) the students
  • To be present during the Kick Off and the team reviews
  • To be present at the final review and assessment together with academic staff

The final team report and the team defense will be confidential. The reviews and the public presentation with other teams and companies are public (open source). The company organizes a study/side trip if this is possible under the current (corona pandemic) RIVM restrictions for the own student team (company case related). The company can develop or co-create a company workshop/lecture (optional) for the JIP program and other teams (besides the own student team).

Practical information

A reimbursement of the travel costs of the students by the company, to visit the company and/or project-stakeholders during the project. To have no limitation for public transport travelling for (international) students without an OV chipcard for students. Optional: An internship allowance, according to the policy of the company.

The working place of the student team is located both in the company and at the TU Delft, depending on the current company, TU Delft and RIVM corona pandemic restrictions.
