Antoni van Leeuwenhoek

In 2023, it will be 350 years since Antoni van Leeuwenhoek invented the microscope. A reason for the Rijksmuseum Boerhaave to go big with an exhibition dedicated to the founder of microscopic research.

Using a particularly small microscope, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek uncovered a completely new world 350 years ago, a world no one had ever seen before. Rijksmuseum Boerhaave is reopening this stunning microworld in the temporary exhibition Unimaginable, how Antoni van Leeuwenhoek discovered the microworld. The exhibition thus also marks our launch of the national Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Year 2023.

In the exhibition Unimaginable, we bring visitors as close as possible to Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. As if looking over his seventeenth-century shoulder. What did he see? And why was it so special? Visitors experience the wonder and pleasure of their first glimpses into the micro-world. We show the beautiful and unique collection that Van Leeuwenhoek and his contemporaries worked with, which literally makes the microworld visible: the microscopes, drawings and letters. But the developments within microscopy and the techniques used today are also discussed. Of course, there is also a focus on current affairs. Microbiology is invaluable in helping to solve big questions in areas such as health and medicine. We can better solve the biggest problems through knowledge of the smallest.
