Circular Science Park – exciting new sustainability initiative at Leiden Bio Science Park
Uniting for a greener future.
Climate change affects us all, and it’s more important than ever to take proactive steps to reduce our environmental footprint. While the pharmaceutical industry brings immense benefits to society, it also poses environmental challenges. To address this, several companies at the Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP) have joined forces to create effective and affordable sustainability strategies.
Collaboration for greater impact.
While there have been many smaller sustainability projects at LBSP, most have operated independently—until now. This new initiative brings together individuals and companies passionate about sustainability, coordinating efforts to promote sustainability and circularity. One of our key goals is to connect those who want to be more sustainable but may be unaware of ongoing projects or best practices. By creating a central platform, we aim to make it easier for anyone to get involved and contribute.
Reducing waste and energy use.
By sharing knowledge and experience, we can significantly reduce waste and energy consumption across the park. One of the ways we’re doing this is by coordinating shared waste management and delivery systems, which will reduce traffic and create a more efficient campus environment.
Reusing and recycling for a circular economy.
We’re committed to reusing materials wherever possible. For instance, expired consumables that no longer meet strict pharmaceutical standards could be repurposed by smaller R&D companies or for educational purposes. Recycling will also be taken to the next level. Setting up multiple waste streams can be costly and time-consuming for smaller companies, but through collaboration, it becomes a viable and impactful option.
Together, we can make a lasting impact!
By joining forces, we’re not just improving sustainability at LBSP—we’re creating a model for others to follow. Together, we can make a real difference for our planet and future generations.
